Team MY BROOKLYN is thrilled to announce that as of earlier today, we made our $20,000 kickstarter goal ahead of schedule! We cannot thank our wonderful and generous backers enough for helping us get there. We could not have done it without each and every one of them! In addition to allowing us to hire Kathryn Barnier to edit the film (she will start in two weeks), the outpouring of goodwill over the past two months has energized us, and we are more convinced than ever that this film needs to be made. We look forward to continuing the conversation, in person and virtually, that has begun as a result of all of us joining together during this effort. We’ll continue to provide updates on the final days of our campaign, and also, of course, on our progress with MY BROOKLYN – we can’t wait to get back to work on the film! Also: we still have four days left in our campaign, so there is still time to pledge and/or spread the word if you were planning on it. Kickstarter lets us keep any extra funding we raise, which we will need for additional finishing expenses such as archival footage rights and sound mixing. We promise to put any extra support to good use!

A big huge thanks again from all of us!

It’s been a fantastic week for My Brooklyn. This past Friday we were featured on the NY Times Local and The Huffington Post – which has a string of 74 comments so far. Kelly was interviewed by a cool blog – Jeremiah’s Vanishing New York. To top it off we programmed and presented for an entire afternoon at the BMW Guggenheim Lab on Saturday.

But we still need your help on our Kickstarter campaign. We only have 19 days left to go and $5,000 left to raise. Please forward on info about our campaign and ask friends to give – even small amounts help. So talk us up on Facebook or your fave social networking site, email family and friends, etc.

At the Lab We showed clips from the unfinished film, inspired heated yet productive discussions around gentrification, affordable housing, public support for luxury high rises and private developments with activists from FUREE, nonprofit leaders, academics like Meredith Tenhoor and local artisans presenting and selling their work.

Next week we are throwing a fundraiser party – hosted by Filmwax – at the Fifth Estate bar in Park Slope. The event goes from 6 – 9. Come meet the filmmakers and subjects. We’ll show clips, talk, drink, and hang out.

My Brooklyn was recently granted the astounding opportunity to present at the BMW Guggenheim Lab on Saturday, August 13th at 33 East 1st Street in the Lower East Side. We are programming an entire afternoon, from 12pm to 5pm of speakers, clips from our unfinished film, and discussion around the key issues. The event is totally free to attend and we welcome you to join us along with FUREE board member Maisha Morales, author and professor Meredith Tenhoor – co-author of Street Value: Shopping, Planning and Politics at Fulton Mall and several more guests. We will show clips from our ongoing Kickstarter campaign, footage from the film, and show our presentation and video from the BAVC NYC 2011 Producers Institute about Brooklyn: The Game. We’ll also screen Kelly and Allison’s film Someplace Like Home, which they made as an organizing tool with FUREE.

As part of the presentation, and to enrich the atmosphere, a number of Brooklyn-based artisans and vendors will sell their creations at the Lab. Through this, we hope to both support some burgeoning artists and demonstrate what public support for small businesses can do for the city, creatively and economically.

We hope you will join us this coming Saturday, August 13th from 12pm – 5pm, with a panel discussion at 7pm at the Lab on 33 East 1st Street, near Houston and Second Avenue.

The BMW Guggenheim Lab is a mobile laboratory traveling to nine major cities worldwide over six years. Led by international, interdisciplinary teams of emerging talents in the areas of urbanism, architecture, art, design, science, technology, education, and sustainability, the Lab addresses issues of contemporary urban life through programs and public discourse. Its goal is the exploration of new ideas, experimentation, and ultimately the creation of forward-thinking solutions for city life.
